The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, and its socioeconomic consequences have prompted a new wave of research into various coronavirus species. The currently known human coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, are often considered to be of zoonotic origin. For this reason, we studied two porcine coronaviruses, Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) and Porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV), to assess the potential risks to humans posed by their evolution. Both TGEV and PRCV belong to the Alphacoronavirus 1 species, along with other viruses that infect cats and dogs. These viruses use a surface spike glycoprotein (S-protein) to enter cells, with aminopeptidase N (APN, ANPEP) serving as their natural receptor.
